James was born Jan. 11, 1952, in Graham to James and Tampa Kenner Dougless. He attended Pampa Public School before enlisting in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam. He was honorably discharged after his tour of duty.
James married Bobbi Murrah on Oct. 13, 1983, in Pampa. Throughout his working career he worked as a pipe fitter and was associated in all facets of the drilling of oil and gas wells in Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico. He was a member of Top of Texas AA and attended Bell Avenue Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Bobbi, in 2008.
Survivors include his fiancee, Judy Leard; five daughters, Jennifer Diane Wilkerson, Kristi Summers Murrah and Amanda Lynn Summers, all of Amarillo, Tampa Jill Wardlow of Evergreen, Colo., and Nicole Summers Ray and husband Jeremy of Denver; three sons, James Charles Dougless, Robert Kirk Dougless and Russell Lyn Dougless, all of Amarillo; a brother, Robert S. Dougless and wife Polly of Midland; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and two nephews.
